NFL Tuesday Takeaways & Picks update
The Patriots have to be the team I start this out with. Somehow, someway they pulled out a victory by playing old school smashmouth football. They went into Buffalo and beat the Bills 14-10, despite only having 3 passing attempts to 46 rushing attempts. Mac Jones completed 2 of 3 for 19 yards. It was cold, and extremely windy, but the Bills missed a FG and just got shut down by the leagues best defense. What a performance by Bill Belichick on MNF, he sealed Coach of the Year with that game.
The Chiefs also had a dominant defensive performance against the Broncos on SNF. While, the offense hasn’t seemed to have the explosive nature of year’s past, the defense has stepped up in a major way. That side of the ball has been dominant the past 5 games, allowing just 11.2 points per game. The defense is carrying the offense, which is insane to say, if Mahomes and that offense starts clicking again, they might be raising another Lombardi trophy in February.
Sticking with the AFC, we had the best rivalry in the conference come down to the final play. The Steelers survived a late Ravens comeback attempt and prevailed 20-19. Credit to John Harbaugh for going for 2, but the Steelers defense and more importantly TJ Watt played brilliantly, doing just enough to prevent a game-winning 2 point conversion and holding on for the win. Watt had 3.5 sacks in that game and was causing havoc for the Ravens nearly every play. Lamar Jackson ended up taking 7 sacks in the game.
The Rams bounced back from their 3 game losing skid, to trounce the Jags by 30. The Rams were reeling and the schedule broke right for them in getting a hapless Jags team at home. Stafford and McVay finally got the offense back in rhythm and even got OBJ involved at the end of the game. Looking forward to their next game against the Cardinals on MNF.
Finally, I have to talk about the Detroit Lions, getting a win at home against the Vikings. They managed to beat the Vikings at the last second, with a TD pass from Goff to Amon St. Brown. What a thrilling victory for the Lions, as they’ve been competitive all season, continuing to fight and battle for Dan Campbell. Pretty impressive to see how hard the team played for him, considering they were 0-10-1!
