NFL Week 17 Takeaways & Picks update
The Bengals have arrived. Led by Joe Burrow and a spectacular performance by Ja’Marr Chase, the Bengals defeated the Chiefs, 34-31. Joe Burrow is in the MVP discussion and the Bengals are a legitimate Super Bowl contender. They prevented the Chiefs from locking up the 1-seed and won the AFC North for the first time since 2015. Winning the AFC North, while the Browns were the preseason favorites was very surprising. I didn’t expect the Bengals and Burrow to be this good this soon. This has also brought the Herbert-Burrow comparison conversation up again, I really would like to see those teams match up in the playoffs to get that answer.
The Titans destroyed the Dolphins and have hampered any future Tua plans the Dolphins were considering during their 7 game win streak. The game was not competitive, Tua and the Dolphins looked overmatched all day. Tannehill didn’t look great, but he was good enough to get his revenge on the Dolphins. The Titans have also been handed the top seed and home field by the Chiefs. Getting Derrick Henry back for the playoffs along with home field is pretty ideal for the Titans. I would also like to say Mike Vrabel should win Coach of the Year. The Titans are going to be the top seed in the AFC and have dealt with tons of injuries.
The streaking Cardinals went into Dallas and came away with a victory over the Cowboys, 25-22. Kyler Murray made just enough plays with his feet and was very accurate downfield in the win. The Cardinals led most of the game, the Cowboys defense wasn’t able to force any turnovers in the game. Dak Prescott and the offense were very disappointing in addition to losing Michael Gallup for the season (torn ACL). The downfield and over the middle passing game has disappeared from the Cowboys offense. The lackluster performance on offense led to a loss and all hopes of securing home field and the top seed have vanished.
Both the Rams and Bucs were able to move ahead of the Cowboys in the playoff seeding into the 2nd and 3rd spots. This weekend the Rams host the Niners, with the Niners needing to win to get into the playoffs. The Bucs host the Panthers, looking to have an easier time with the Panthers out of playoff contention. The Packers also defeated the Vikings, securing the top-seed in the NFC. The Cowboys face the Eagles next, the Eagles trying to make the playoffs while the Cowboys may want to work on getting their offense back on track.
The AFC has a play in game, with the Chargers and Raiders facing off Sunday night for a playoff spot. With one week left in the regular season, most of the playoff spots have been secured. We are just waiting on the matchups, and more importantly which playoff game will be on MNF.
